What is my time worth?

After spending 20+ years in the marketing and advertising business, it was my life long goal to create permanent residual income streams. I have done this with the 7 business’ that I have operated from my home and now I would like to share it with the world.


For the past number of years I have traveled across North America on business and have eaten out more times than I would like to admit. Each time(usually by myself) I would wonder why their wasn’t some single sheet condensed form of reading material available. Sure there are dirty newspapers filled with negative news and such, but I’ve seen hundreds of these small restaurant publications around the world, and I wanted to be able to offer that same 10 minutes of light, positive reading material to consumers around the globe. At the majority of eating establishments there was nothing in this type of format. Some of these even claim to have the trademark and special copyrights on certain things. But I’m here to tell you, whether you are looking at starting your own single sheet restaurant newsletter or looking to do it with us, you need to know that anyone, anywhere can create this single broadsheet concept and begin publishing. The real key to the success of this product lies in the passion of the person who is operating it locally. They must understand marketing, sales and advertising and must be able to cold call on business and must enjoy solving problems for business’.


It was in the spring of 2002 when a company who provided content for another publication I was operating created a Canadian focused single sheet publication. After research and focus groups it was decided that Flying Cow would be a wonderful name because you would never forget it. Isn’t that what a Branding Strategy is all about?


I decided a year later that we would offer this business opportunity to others and in November 2003 we opened in New Brunswick. Since then we have opened in Canada,  United States and Mexico.  Flying Cow has a goal to be the most read restaurant publication in the world in the next few years.

The major question you should ask yourself about doing this on your own, is what is your time worth? We believe its worth more than $5/hr searching, editing and proofing content and ads. When you review our system, you’ll see, that earning $50/hr out in the fields selling ads makes much more sense.


Operators are carefully selected through an interview process in order to qualify. Prior to this telephone interview, potential operators reading this are asked to complete the following homework:

  1. Do competitive research on all mediums available in their marketplace.
  2. Map out the markets to find out where ‘all’ the restaurants are located.
  3. Find 7 business who will become your pioneer advertisers. They will pay for the publication for your start up so there is no out of pocket money for you. The best part of this is that you are running a profitable business from the very beginning and the remaining 28 ads are your profit.
  4. Then get permission to be in your first zone that would be comprised of at least 40 Distributors.

Once the homework has been completed and the candidate passes the interview, they are trained on how to set up distribution, sales and marketing methodologies of the Flying Cow operation.  Operators require a computer. The cost to get involved in the business and secure a territory is $2,950.00. This ‘deposit’ gives the potential operator everything they need to get their business up and running. It includes all templates to run their business. This included contracts, tick sheets, customer profiles, training conference calls etc.


We are marketing consultants, not ad sales people. This statement and methodology is what separates us from any competition in the market. Essentially if you follow our system, you will never be arguing over price with a customer. We offer true value that most other medias do not have access to. Truly, they do not know what we know.


The operator will be responsible for running their own Flying Cow including marketing spaces, servicing customers and delivering the papers.


When I put this together, I had consulted with many friends in the media business. Most of them wanted to create a residual income stream. They wanted to sell advertising, work with clients to solve problems and leave all the backroom details up to someone else. This is how we have developed the Flying Cow Independent Operator program. You market the spaces and collect your money and you simply pay Flying Cow a small fee each week. Delivered to your door every 7 days. You even get your own fulltime creative director. They create, edit, proof and submit ads on your behalf to the layout artist and printer. Our Creative Department is the backbone of the Flying Cow business model. They create, edit, proof and submit ads on your behalf to the layout artist, who creates PDF files for printing.


Western Canadian and US operators should locate a local printer where possible. And then operators have the possibility of owning multiple territories which would increase profits depending on how many territories they owned.


Since first launching Flying Cow on July 1, 2002 in Halifax, Nova Scotia expansion has lead to a variety of Independent Operators in Canada, USA and Mexico. 


For those who you who have been wanting to do this ‘on your own’, consider this. You will need to have approximately 4-12 hours a week to organize, pay for and edit your content. You will need to create, edit, change and rotate all ads each week. You will need to do the entire layout each week. Again, we simply ask:
